Permanent Magnets: Myths, Misconceptions and Marketing
It turns out that everything you read on the internet is not always true. Almost every day I see articles and postings that overstate or mispresent some aspect of our industry. From magnets falling from the sky to the next NdFeB magnet breakthrough (it’s been 40 years by the way!). Here is my top 10 list of these myths and my opinion of reality.
Rare Earth Magnets: Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow.
The global permanent magnet market is dominated by rare earth magnets based on the Nd2Fe14B phase accounting for over 60% of total magnet sales. The historical development of rare earth magnets will be overviewed. The current status of material development and processing technologies will be reviewed. With the forecast growth in applications e.g. in both ICE and HEV/EV markets, the search for alternatives to the current Nd, Pr and Dy alloy compositions is being pursued.

The Critical Materials Innovation Hub is a U.S. DOE Energy Innovation Hub led by Ames National Laboratory that seeks to accelerate innovative scientific and technological solutions to develop resilient and secure supply chains for rare-earth metals and other materials critical to the success of clean energy technologies.
Permanent Magnet Division (PMD)
This group was originally founded in 1959 and operated as the Magnetic Materials Producers Association (MMPA). In 2003, PMD became the International Magnetics Association (IMA) and IMA replaced MMPA, expanding its scope and operations in recognition of the global nature of the magnetic industry. In 2007, PMD became a part of SMMA, the motor and motion trade group. In 2015, SMMA merged with the Motion Control & Motor Association (MCMA) – which is now A3 Motion Control & Motors. PMD is now an active part of A3, which supports the work of the PMD and the greater good it brings to the industry.
The European Magnetism Association
The European Magnetism Association (EMA) is a non-profit organisation promoting the development of magnetism and magnetic materials in Europe, through rising the visibility and the impact of research on fundamental and applied magnetism. EMA acts as an umbrella organisation for activities in magnetism in Europe.
